The Passover Instituted

“Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, ‘every man shall take his household a lamb. They shall kill it at twilight and take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it. They they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread they shall eat it. It is the Lord’s Passover. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance. Then the children of Israel went away and did so; just as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.”                          Exodus 12:1-28

Rachel looks at the calendar and dread fills her heart. Passover is only weeks away. Her children have made it a game to see who can do the most cleaning each day. They know the entire house must be free of leaven before the first night of Passover. Rachel has a sense her children are working extra hard this year so they can see her smile again.

Volunteers Packing Food Boxes

Tears come to Rachel’s eyes as she thinks back over the past year. First, her husband Dov was injured in a terrorists attack. Thank G-d, he survived but, he wasn’t able to work for several months. Then the baby, Lior got sick. Thankfully, she is now healthy but, the hospital bill took its toll on the family’s budget. Rachel doesn’t know how she is going to purchase the matza and wine that are necessary elements for their Passover Seder. Rachel breathes a prayer asking G-d for strength, and for help for her family.

Suddenly the doorbell rings. Rachel opens the door and is greeted by a smiling woman. The woman is carrying a box; she hands it to Rachel and says, “This is for your Seder meal, and the whole week of Passover.” When Rachel opens the box she finds a week’s worth of groceries in addition to boxes of matza, (enough for the whole week!), a bottle of wine, cans of vegetables, eggs, apples and oranges, horseradish, potatoes, and chicken!

Rachel breathes a prayer of thanksgiving that G-d has answered her prayer for help so quickly. She is overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. She hopes that you understand that you’ve brought more than just food. You have brought her hope!
